With the advancement of laser technology, there are so many laser engraving machines that are available in the market nowadays. It can be now purchased conveniently over the Internet and the cost of owning one does not entail a huge amount of capital that even start-up entrepreneurs can invest in a decent laser-engraving machine.
But before purchasing this equipment, one must know the concept and basic operation of laser-engraving machine. Traditional laser engraving tool utilized a burin to create various engravings but today, most laser engraving tools are already machine-controlled.
This machine-controlled laser engraving machines are basically composed of three parts such as laser, a controller and a surface. The laser is the one that function like a pen which traces the designs or the pattern. The controller is the one that control or direct the laser while the surface is the material where the laser acts on; this is also known as the engraver's canvas.
The most common type of laser-engraving machine is the X-Y table. This has a stationary work piece and the laser creates vectors by moving in X and Y directions. The second common type of laser-engraving machine is cylindrical pieces type where the laser go across a fine helix with on and off pulsing that create the figure on a raster basis.
There is another type of laser engraving machines where both the laser and work piece are stationary. This has galvo mirrors that move the laser beam over the work piece surface. When using this type of machine, you can either engrave in vector or raster mode.
Laser engraving machines that use vector mode follows the line and curve of the pattern to be engraved that is very similar to pen-based plotter draws where it constructs line segments from a description of the outlines of a pattern. On the other hand, laser-engraving machine with raster mode engraves by tracing the laser across the surface in a back-and-forth and gradually advancing linear pattern similar on the way inkjet printer works.
By programming the controller, you can actually engrave a wide variety of patterns. The speed at which the laser beam moves across the item is also considered in creating engraving patterns. Modifying the intensity and spread of the laser beam allows you to generate more designs. And lastly, in choosing laser engraving machines, you should consider what kind of materials or items that you wish to engrave and the expected output that you want to achieve in day to day basis.
